Fascinating Facts

The thylacine was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times.
It was native to mainland Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea.
It was often called the 'Tasmanian tiger' because of the stripes on its back.
Despite looking like a dog, it was actually a marsupial — more closely related to kangaroos.
Both males and females had pouches, but the male pouch protected reproductive organs.
The last confirmed wild thylacine was killed in 1930.
The last known thylacine died in captivity in 1936.
It had one of the widest jaw openings of any mammal — nearly 120 degrees.
